Associated Press, founded in 1846, is a not-for-profit news agency running a 24/7 essential global news network from two principal locations, New York & London.

Following an internal drive to integrate the traditional forms of news gathering, text & photos, with the more recent developments in television, radio & online, AP commissioned tilney shane early 2006 to help them realise the mantra ‘One AP’ in which the boundaries between each discipline begin to merge.  This would physically manifest itself in the consolidation of two London sites into one to provide a Central London hub.

The larger of the two sites selected to be home to the new single-minded AP was their existing 82,000 sq.ft Grade II listed gin warehouse backing on to Camden Lock.  The grand scale & potential openness of the floor plates was exactly right.  However the Grade II listing, the ad hoc configuration of the internal space & an infrastructure that could no longer support the business had resulted in a site that needed a complete rethink from top to bottom.  In addition there was the challenge of having to carry out the redevelopment in an occupied building, maintaining 24/7 business operation.

The works including a 8,600 sq.ft newsroom, edit suites, office accommodation for 600 staff, a data centre, external plant buildings & fully upgraded I.T., broadcasting & services infrastructure was successfully handed over in late 2008 following an 18-month phased construction programme.
